Go Global

Studying abroad is a radically life-changing experience that will expose you to new people, places and cultures and allow you the opportunity to study fascinating subjects. SBU students have participated in study-abroad programs in exciting places around the world, including:

  • Australia
  • Costa Rica
  • Grenada
  • Italy
  • London
  • Spain

As an SBU student, you can select a program in locations like these from a list of pre-approved options, from film studies in Los Angeles to a semester in an English countryside manor. If you find another potential program outside of this list, you may submit it for approval.

Caleb Holdern
"Studying abroad enhanced my education as I was presented with different worldviews, forcing me to evaluate what I believe, why I believe it, and how to defend my view in an academic and impactful way."

If you have completed two or more years of university-level study (which is required by most programs) and have a GPA of at least 2.75, set up an appointment with SBU’s director of external studies so you can begin the application process at least a semester before you intend to go abroad.

Throughout the process, the director of external studies will advise you and your family about arrangements, logistics, safety and more. SBU will arrange for tuition, fees and transfer of credit, although you are responsible for application fees or deposits to study abroad programs. Keep in mind that institutional scholarships are not transferable to study abroad students.

When considering study abroad, be sure to visit with your academic advisor to discuss your plans, graduation requirements, major, and what courses you intend to take while abroad, which all must be approved by your major advisor and the director of external studies.

To get started on your study abroad adventure, contact Dr. Kelly Malone, director of global education, at (417) 328-1733 or kmalone@SBUniv.edu.

Fulbright Scholars

Another way you can pursue an international experience is through the Fulbright Program, one of the most prestigious international exchange programs in the world, which provides grants to recent college graduates, graduate students and faculty to study, teach and do research in a foreign country.

To qualify, you must complete a rigorous application. Throughout the application process, you will receive advice and support as you work with SBU’s Fulbright campus representative.
